Compressed round sofas: how do they work, and do they last?
Yoann Bourin
The short version: a compressed round sofa is an all-foam sofa that has the air taken out of it at the factory so it fits into a compact box. Once you open it, the foam regains its volume within minutes and reaches its final shape in 24 to 48 hours. There is nothing to assemble: the sofa is made in one piece. How well it holds up depends on the quality of the foam and the fabric.
How can a sofa fit in a box?
A round sofa like the BULÉA has no legs, no wood frame and no springs: seat, back and arms form a single volume of foam covered in fabric. That all-foam construction is exactly what makes compression possible.
At the factory, the sofa is vacuum-packed: the air in the foam is removed, then the sofa is rolled or folded and slipped into a box. It is the same idea as the mattress in a box that many households already own.
The result: a sofa 75 inches wide (190 cm) ships in a box much smaller than a traditional sofa, and it goes through a front door or up a staircase without taking anything apart.
What happens when you open it?
- Move the box into the room where the sofa will stay. Once it expands, it is bulkier to move.
- Open the box and remove the plastic wrap, cutting carefully so you don't damage the fabric (blunt-tip scissors rather than a box cutter).
- The foam takes in air: the sofa regains most of its volume within minutes.
- It reaches its final shape and comfort in 24 to 48 hours. The rounded sections fill out and any creases from shipping gradually disappear.
You can sit on it on day one. Comfort and looks simply improve once that window has passed.
Does a compressed sofa last?
The compression only lasts as long as the trip. What makes the sofa durable are two things you can check on every product page:
1. The foam
High-resilience (HR) foam is a polyurethane foam that springs back quickly after being compressed. It is what lets a compressed sofa regain its volume, and it also limits the "sagging seat" effect over time. The BULÉA and the SORA both use high-resilience foam; on the SORA, its density is 32 kg/m³ (2 lb/ft³).
2. The fabric
Upholstery durability is measured with abrasion tests. The Martindale test, the European standard, rubs the fabric until visible wear appears and counts the cycles. The higher the number, the better the fabric stands up to everyday friction. The BULÉA fabric is tested to 36,000 Martindale cycles, a level generally considered suitable for heavy everyday use in a living room.
The limits to know before you buy
A compressed round sofa is not for everyone. Better to know this up front:
- The cover is not removable. The color you choose is final, and care means a soft, slightly damp cloth and regular dusting.
- It is deep. The BULÉA 2-seater measures 75 × 45 × 31 in (190 × 114 × 80 cm, W × D × H). At 45 inches deep, check the space available, walkway included.
- It is not a sleeper sofa. If you need a guest bed, the SORA is designed for that.
- It does not reach its final shape instantly. Give it 24 to 48 hours before judging it.

The three sizes of the BULÉA round sofa
- BULÉA Mini (armchair): 47 × 45 × 28 in (120 × 114 × 70 cm). Generous for an armchair, great opposite a sofa or in a reading nook.
- BULÉA (2-seater): 75 × 45 × 31 in (190 × 114 × 80 cm), for a medium-sized living room.
- BULÉA Maxi (3-seater): 94 in wide (240 cm), for larger living rooms.
All three come in the same colors, so you can put together a matching living room.
